Hooked on Books with My Random Musings

Hi Everyone welcome to the second instalment of Hooked on books. You may not know but I run a book group on Facebook called Hooked on books with Joanna Victoria which you are welcome to join to talk all things books.

Every Wednesday I will be bringing you a brand new guest series. I’ll be featuring  some lovely bloggers  who will be sharing their answers to reading/book related questions. I hope you manage to find some more wonderful blogs to read.  If you’re a blogger and want to take part then get in touch!

This  weeks instalment features Debbie from My Random Musings

Born in 1982 in North East England, I knew from an early age I wanted to be a writer. Life got in the way, and the dream was put on the back burner, although never forgotten. I am now a full time author and freelance writer and I write my own blog, My Random Musings.

I have published three novels, two short story collections, a non-fiction book and a collection of funny poems.

What book(s) are you currently reading?
I’m currently re-reading the Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth because I’ve finally gotten around to buying Four and it’s been so long since I read the trilogy I wanted to refresh my memory before reading them.

What book is next on your “to be read” list?
Four of course and then Like China by Vanessa Streete.

What is your favourite genre to read?
I can’t choose just one – my joint favourites are horror, YA fiction and crime (including both fiction and true crime books).

Who are some your favourite authors?
I have so many.
For horror it would be Stephen King, Richard Laymon, and Ramsey Campbell.
For crime, John Grisham, Mandasue Heller and Peter James.
For YA, Veronica Roth and Michael Grant.
And for general fiction, I love Jodi Picoult and Adele Parks.

What are your top 5 favourite books?
This answer changes every time I’m asked the question lol. Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M Auel and Rosemary’s Baby by Ira Levin usually make the top five and the other three vary.
Right now, the list would be:
The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M Auel
Rosemary’s Baby by Ira Levin
The House That Jack Built by Graham Masterton
The Pact by Jodi Picoult
Perfect People by Peter James
I also feel I should mention 1984 by George Orwell and Lord of the Flies by William Golding, two of the few classics I actually enjoyed.
Sorry for cheating a bit here but this question is hard haha.

Paperback vs digital books - which do you prefer and why?
Paperback all the way. Nothing beats the feel and smell of a real book. And I always find when I read digital books, I tend to skim read them and I miss so much atmosphere and a lot of the little details.

What was your favourite book or series of books as a child?
I loved The Worst Witch series and anything by Roald Dahl or Enid Blyton when I was really young. As I got into my early teens, I discovered Point Horror and Christopher Pike books and that’s where my love for horror books came from.

Do you ever cheat and skip to the end of a book? Why do you do it?
Rarely. I only really do it if the idea behind the book is interesting enough that I want to find out how it ends, but the writing is boring enough that I can’t imagine dragging myself through all of the pages to get to the resolution.
I used to force myself to finish any book I started, but now, with a to be read pile of around 200 books that’s still growing, I think life really is too short to read bad books. The picture is only a small selection of the books in my to be read pile. The piles you can see go back three times, I have three more piles in a corner and all of my bed’s storage space is filled with them.

Do you hang on to your books once you've read them? Or do you prefer to pass them on to a charity shop / a friend?
I usually hang on to them as I know I often want to re-read them. The ones I know I wouldn’t read again get passed on to friends I think would enjoy them, or they go to charity shops.

Do you read one book at a time or do you have multiples on the go?
Usually I stick to one book at a time unless I have several books that I’ve agreed to review on the blog, then I try to read a couple at once to get the reviews out in a timely fashion.

Describe your ideal reading nook
I can read anywhere, but ideally, I like to be inside, comfy with my feet up and the rain pouring down outside. I like a nice cup of coffee or glass of wine to sip as I read.
