5 Child-Friendly Activities to Celebrate Earth Hour

Earth Hour is a global movement that falls each year on the last Saturday in March. The movement encourages individuals, families, and communities to turn off their lights for one hour to raise awareness about climate change and promote sustainability. As well as raising awareness it’s also a fantastic opportunity to help encourage and engage children in meaningful and fun activities that promote eco-consciousness. Here are five child-friendly things you can do during Earth Hour this weekend.

1. Glow-in-the-Dark Games

Just because the lights are off doesn’t mean you have to stop the fun. Set up a glow-in-the-dark game session using items such as glow sticks, neon bracelets, and fluorescent balls. There are many games but favourites include:

Playing hide-and-seek, ring toss, or you could create a glow bowling alley using recycled bottles. These games add a magical touch to the darkness while keeping the kids active as well as entertained.

2. Nature-Themed Storytelling by Candlelight

Unplug the families technology and enjoy some old-fashioned storytelling together. Use flashlights or candles to create a cozy atmosphere and share nature-themed tales. You can read books found at your local library about conservation or you could invent your own eco-adventures with your children. It's a fun way for  them use their imagination to create characters like planet-saving superheroes etc.

3. DIY Upcycling Craft Projects

Get creative and have an eco-friendly craft session together. Gather recyclable items like cardboard boxes, tin cans, milk bottles or old magazines and turn them into fun crafts. You could make bird feeders, planters, or other nature-inspired art pieces. This activity is great for  helping kids to learn about the importance of reusing materials and reducing waste.

4. Eco-Quiz or Trivia Night

Turn Earth Hour into an educational experience with a fun eco-themed quiz. Prepare a mix of  questions about animals, plants, recycling, and climate change that are age appropriate. Offer small eco-friendly prizes, such as reusable water bottles or seed packets, to keep the excitement going. This activity encourages learning in a playful and interactive way.

5. Stargazing Adventure

With the lights off, Earth Hour is a perfect time for introducing children to the beauty of the night sky. Grab a blanket, lay back, and enjoy stargazing together.  You can  use a stargazing app or guidebook to help you to identify constellations.

Earth Hour is more than just switching off the lights—it’s a chance to create meaningful family memories while teaching children about sustainability. By incorporating fun and educational activities, you can make Earth Hour an engaging and impactful experience for the whole family. Let’s inspire the next generation to care for our planet, one activity at a time.
