Top Tips for Helping Your Child with Maths

*This is a collaborative post

While maths might not be the most exciting subject for some, it plays a huge role in child development. Aside from gaining numerical smarts, your child can enhance their analytical, problem solving, critical thinking, and time management skills. We have teamed up with a boys’ school in St Albans to share a few of our top tips for helping children with their maths.

Find a Way to Speak Their Language

Integrating your child’s interests into their work can help you to keep their attention and make content easier to understand. This is something that you can do by creating word problems and using unconventional resources such as dolls and sweets.

Online Maths Games

Thanks to the internet you will never be short of ideas. There are many websites that you can find that have free online maths games for children including football games where correct answers are needed to score goals. A lot of them are also multiplayer games that they can play with family and friends. A great way to get your child to do some maths without even knowing!

Maths Posters

Times table posters are great for helping children with their multiplications. Large colourful wall posters can help children to look over their maths whenever they want without getting any books out. This practice can help them to become more confident and help them to improve on their performance at school.

Sit In on Homework

Hanging around while your child does their homework can make it easier for them to approach you if they're stuck, allowing you to run through and explain. This can help to iron out any issues while making sure that it gets done.

Use Real World Examples

When you’re out and about with your child, don’t forget to highlight the maths problems that you come across. Take the opportunity to work them out together for a memorable lesson and to demonstrate its importance
