Solar energy is a growing source of electricity

*This is a collaborative post

Solar energy is a growing source of electricity in the UK, with numerous benefits for rural communities. In this article, we will explore the ways in which solar energy can benefit rural communities, including cost savings, financial incentives, environmental benefits, and the potential for selling excess electricity back to the grid.

Cost Savings One of the primary benefits of solar energy for rural communities is the potential for cost savings. When a community installs a solar panel system, it is able to generate its own electricity, which can significantly reduce energy costs. The amount of electricity that can be generated depends on the size of the solar panel system and the efficiency of the panels. The more electricity that can be generated, the less the community will need to purchase from the grid, which can lead to significant cost savings.

Financial Incentives In addition to the cost savings of generating your own electricity, there are also several financial incentives available in the UK for rural communities that choose to install solar panels. The most well-known is the Feed-in Tariff (FIT), which pays communities for the electricity they generate from their solar panels. The rate of payment depends on the size of the solar panel system and the amount of electricity generated. The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) provides financial incentives for the use of solar thermal systems, which use solar energy to heat water. There may also be local or regional incentives available for solar panel adoption, so it is worth checking with your local council to see what is available.

Environmental Benefits In addition to the financial benefits, solar energy also offers numerous environmental benefits for rural communities. Solar panels do not emit any greenhouse gases during operation.

The Potential for Selling Excess Electricity Back to the Grid If a rural community generates more electricity than it needs, it may be able to sell the excess back to the grid through a program called the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). Under the SEG, energy providers are required to pay communities for the excess electricity they generate from their solar panels. This can provide an additional source of income for the community.

In conclusion, solar energy offers numerous benefits for rural communities in the UK. From cost savings to financial incentives and environmental benefits, there are many reasons to consider solar panel adoption. The potential for selling excess electricity back to the grid can provide an additional source of income for the community. While the initial investment in solar panels may be significant, the long-term cost savings and environmental benefits make it a worthwhile consideration. If you are a member of a rural community interested in exploring solar panel adoption, it is important to carefully evaluate the feasibility of installation and consider the various financial incentives available. With proper planning and maintenance, solar panels can provide a reliable source of electricity and a variety of benefits for your community.

Domestic solar energy has changed so much since it was instigated. At that time it became difficult to sell your house. I presume this is not still the case.

We always wanted install solar panels but sadly we were facing the South and so they declined it. Would have been great to get some savings for our holiday fund

I'd absolutely love to go solar, sadly can't afford it but my neighbours have it and it's fabulous!
