Child-friendly window covering ideas

 *This is a collaborative post

If you are a parent of young children or a parent to be, one of the most important things you will need to do is to child proof your home. Window coverings are an especially important thing to factor. Blinds and curtains are dangerous, thanks to having cords and/or strings. So - you may want to think about another child-friendly option instead, shutters.

Below I'm going to share with you why wooden window shutters are a great alternative to blinds and curtains, when you have children.

No cords or strings

Shutters, unlike blinds and curtains don't have any cords or strings. Thousands of children have had accidents due to dangerous cords or strings. Sadly in some circumstances this has lead to death. Shutters are instead fitted within the frame of your window. This means that they don't move around, so children can't grab any loose parts.

Extra security

Shutters also provide extra security when you have your windows open. Shutters can be locked to keep children safe and prevent them from falling out of your window or escaping.

Provides extra privacy

If you opt for shutters they provide extra privacy. This is especially true whether you opt for shutters with slats or solid shutters. Solid shutters mean they have no slats so provide a bit more privacy. Solid shutters are popular for children's bedrooms as they block out anyone outside from looking in, as well as day light so they are ideal at nap time.

Noise reduction

Shutters can help to reduce any outside noises. This is ideal if you live on a busy road. With traffic going up and down all day/night this means children are likely to sleep better.

Reduce allergy symptoms

As shutters are easy to maintain/clean, all you need to do give them a quick wipe over with a damp cloth. Doing this regularly can help to keep allergy triggers such as dust and pollen to a minimum. Curtains tend to be dust traps and are unable to be cleaned as often, especially if they are big and bulky to try and take down. Blinds tend to be a bit tricky to fully clean properly as well.

They don't have to be expensive

Shutters don't have to cost more than curtains or blinds as often believed. This is because of DIY options are possible with time and patience. That way you can have the luxury of shutters that are just as affordable as blinds and curtains.
