My 2023 GOALS

Happy New Year!  It's time for me to share with you my goals for the year ahead. Setting goals for the year ahead is something I've shared on this blog near enough every year. This year I'm setting goals for myself for different areas of my life you can find out more below.

MAKING S.M.A.R.T GOALS FOR 2022

Happy New Year! I always start a new year off with setting goals. When setting my goals for the New Year I make sure my goals are S.M.A.R.T.
S.M.A.R.T stands for Specific, Measurable, Achieveable, Relivant and Timebased.

Specific - Being specific will mean breaking down what you want to achieve. Ask yourself questions such as what, where, why, when and who.

Measurable - How will you know you have completed your goal? How do you plan to track how you are doing?

Achieveable - Is your goal actually attainable? Do you have the time ?

Relivant - Is your goal worthwhile? Does it fit in with what is happening in your life currently?

Timebased - When will this goal begin and end? Set milestones along the way, what do you want to have achieved quater of away and half  the way through?

Focusing on Relationships in 2020

When busy with day to day life it can be easy for our relationships to be put on the back burner. Having a child with additional needs makes it harder for us as well especially for Stuart and I to spend time together just the two of us.

In 2020 I want to improve my relationships not just with Stuart and Blake but also with my other family members and friends here are my ways to do so:

- Disconnect or "Unplug" more
- Be more "Present"
- Call family more often
- Reach out to family and friends I don't speak to often
- Meet new people
- Make time for dates with Stuart
- Establish family nights
- Have mum and son time
- Get to know our neighbours better
- Make new friends
- Go out to groups and meet new people
- Arrange time with an old friend whenever I'm in the area
- More time with my mum and sister one to one when visiting

Sorting out my finances in 2020

Looking after my mind and mental health in 2020

In 2019 I didn't look after my mind and mental health very well either. I think relocating, Stuart's issues, home problems along with Blake's autism diagnosis and the constant meetings meant I've not focused on me enough. I've not really talked much about the mental health issues I had during 2019 fully and it's still something I'm not fully comfortable about. But the basics of it was I had my medication increased which in return had awful side effects where I was hallucinating.

So 2020 I'm making sure I focus on my mental health and get help when I need it. My goals also include ways to help improve my mental capacity as well. So here are ways I'm planning to improve my mental life:

- Be more open about how I am feeling
- Learn how to manage stress
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Be more organised
- Leave my comfort zone more
- Practise mindfulness
- Meditate
- Prevent burnout
- Focus on selfcare
- Create to do lists
- Seek professional help when needed
- Keep a memory jar
- Keep diary writing
- Refer myself for counselling
- avoid being around toxic people
- spend more time alone doing the things I love
- Find ways to help keep me motivated
- Learn to say no
- Explore my creative side more

Looking after my physical health in 2020

Looking after my body and overall phyical health in 2020 is really important. It's an area that I have put on the weigh side in 2019 and because of that I'm now not great physically and have a lot of areas I need to improve on.

After having some rather frustrating symptoms last year. I finally went to the Drs and got myself a blood test which revealed I have type 2 diabetes. When I had my nurse appointment I was shocked at how high my blood sugar levels are.

With that said in regards to my physical health goals for 2020 it's not just about making healthy changes to my diet and exercising but so much more.

Here are some ideas of what i will be doing this year to improve my physical health:

- Cut out sugar in my diet
- Eat smaller meals
- Get my 5 a day
- Cut out fast food
- Watch how much carbs I'm having
- Drink more water
- Drink less caffeine
- Cut out alcohol completely
- loose weight
- Move more
- Set aside time to exercise for at least 10 mins a day
- Get a better sleep routine
- Take vitamins
- Have regular checkups at my Drs
- Make sure I take my medication
-  Attend my diabities appointments
- Get my eyes tested
- Go to the dentist regularly
- Look after my hair
- Look after my skin

My goals for 2020

Happy New Year! 2020 is here which means the start of a new decade. It also means that this year I'll be turning 30. I always start a new year off with setting goals. This year I'm setting goals for myself for different areas of my life and will be sharing more posts on ways I plan to achieve them and a bit more detail too.

Look after my body and my overall physical health.
There are many things I want to do in this area. Some examples include keeping up with healthy eating, exercising more, drinking more water and get more sleep.

Look after my mind and mental health
Last year I struggled with my mental health and so in 2020 I want to focus on things such as learning to deal with stress and anxiety along with being more organised etc.

Enjoy and have more life experiences
Ideas include ticking off more from my 30 before 30 list, Read 65 books, go on at least one holiday, get a new tattoo and more.

Sorting out finances
Such as saving money, making more money, building an emergency fund.

Spend more time focusing on my relationships
Such as being more present, spend more time with family and friends, make new friends, spend more time with Stuart when it's just us.

So there you have it. These are the areas in my life I'll be focusing on in 2020.

2019 Goals | How did I do?

I'm honestly glad that 2019 is coming to end. Don't get we wrong we've had some good moments this year but also quite a bit of bad luck which makes me feel that 9 is our unlucky number. I say this because 2009 was also an awful year for us so it's  got me thinking.

Tomorrow I'll be sharing my year in review so you will know more about what 2019 has been like for us. Today though is about the goals I set myself on the 1st January and if I've actually stuck at them.

1) Read 60 books
This year I signed up to the goodreads challenge and set myself a goal of reading 60 books by December 31st. I am happy to say I completed this goal on 7th December and have managed to read a further 3 books. I'll definitely be setting a challenge again for 2020.

2) Indulge in more creative activities
I've been getting into Calligraphy, colouring and starting to fill up a sketchbook with some art work. I definitely want to continue in 2020 with these hobbies as I've really been enjoying them.

3) Make time for meditation
I've sort of done this however I could certainly need to be doing it alot more often than I have been to make it into a habit.

4. Visit new places
We've definitely visited quite a few places but it definitely is something in 2020 I want to do more of.

If you set goals at the beginning of year have you managed to stick at them?

My 2019 Goodreads Reading Challenge

This year I've really got into using Goodreads to track what books I've read. At the beginning of 2019 I chose to set a target on there of reading 60 books by the end of December. I actually managed to complete that at the beginning of December and so in total I've read 63 books this year. I'm hoping to finish book 64 by the 31st though.

I'll definitely be setting myself a challenge for 2020 along with other reading goals which I'll be sharing about more in tomorrow's post. Its actually lovely to see the stats from Goodreads  and I've done a screenshot of them for you to look at.

How to raise a happy autistic child has be my favourite non fiction read this year. It's such a helpful insight into autism and really has helped with my understanding of what it's like for my son. I highly recommend this book if you have a child or a child in the family who is on the spectrum.

I've read two classics this year The Handmaids Tail and Wuthering Heights and out of both I definitely prefer Wuthering Heights. I plan to read more than 2 classics in 2020. I've also read alot of thrillers/crime/mystery books which was expected as it's my favourite genre. My favourite out of that category were the 2 by Cara Hunter In the Dark and No way out.

My favourite fiction book of the year is The Great Alone. Fantasy wise A curse so dark and lonely was a winner a for me.

My least favourite book of the year is a tie between The Stranger and Blood Orange. I finished reading them, but they were reads I just couldn't get into.

I've read some reads from my favourite authors and enjoyed  A spark of light by Jodi Picoult. Lisa Jewels books were as great as usual. Nine perfect strangers by Lianne Moriarty was a bit of a disappointment. YOU I loved after having watched the Netflix show. The Secret library was a great book about books with facts I didn't know.

I'm pleased with the mixture of reads for this year and I definitely need to register at my local library in 2020.  I definitely want to broaden my reading next year and read books I wouldnt usually go for such as poetry for example. Come back tomorrow to find out about my reading goals for 2020.

2018 Goals

Happy New Year! I hope you had a lovely new years eve and haven't got too much of a sore head today. We spent new years eve at home as usual scoffing buffet lunch, drinking a glass of rose and I brought in the new year with my nose stuck in a book.

Every year I like to jot down a list of goals of what I want to achieve for the year ahead. I acutally spent some time yesterday listing them in a notebook and now I wanted to add this this list here to share with you my plans.

Hot Pink Wellingtons

No Spend October (2017)

October is here and the last month has really flown by. Spur of the moment I have decided to do No Spend October. I really do need to cut down on my spending, so I thought by taking part in No Spend October this will really give me a kick start in curbing my spending.

The rules are pretty simple from the first of October to the 1st of November  no spending on things that aren't essential. All bills and personal bills such as my phone, insurance and Netflix are covered for.

I have also going to be accounting for special circumstances these are:

- My slimming world countdown ends on the 26th so I will be buying a new one

- I'll allow myself to buy chocolate/Hifi bars occasionally as I can't completely go without them.

- Travel costs only if visiting my family

- Blake's friend's birthday gift

- If Blake needs anything for Pre-School.

So what will I be cutting out:

- Takeaways/eating out
- Drinks when out and about
- Alcohol
- Clothes
- Toys
- Lottery/scratch cards
- Entertainment (movies, books,  day trips etc)
- Cosmetics
-Home Decor
- Bus fairs
- Anything else non essential you can think of.

I'll be making sure there are no shopping trips or online spending this includes no charity shops, ebay, facebook selling pages, no amazon (eek) no matter how much of a bargain something is.

I'll share with you if I cave in and buy something I shouldn't and I'll also be sharing with you some of my ideas on things we have done. Here are some ideas below on how I am going to manage during the month.

1. When going out take my own drink with me
2. Eat before going out/take a packed lunch
3. Batch cook lunches (I'm going to make soups and pastas)
4. Use up what we have: Food, cosmetics, toiletries, cleaning products
5. Don't go into any shops other than supermarkets for a month
6. Go to supermarket with a shopping list and stick to it
7. Read books I own but haven't yet read
8. If I do run out of books to read I can borrow from the library instead of buying.
9. watch movies that we already have or are on netflix
10. Remove the amazon app from my phone/tablet
11. Find free days out and ideas of things to do with Blake that don't cost anything
12. Walk rather than get the local bus

I know its not going to be easy especially with half term coming up at the end of the month and with Halloween around the corner too.

I'd love to know if you will be joining in or if you have any tips or ideas for the month ahead for me.

#PlanAheadToSave

As I mentioned in my new years goals post this year my main goal is to sort out mine/our finances. I really want to start saving more this year, spend less and lower our out goings.

I think its important to be more aware about where your money is going and areas you can cut down on. Before I moved in with Stuart back in late 2008 I wasn't sensible with money and had no savings. Over the years I've learnt to be a lot more thrifty and frugal but there is definitely more room for improvement, especially when it comes to unnecessary spending on Blake for example.

I wanted to share with you some of the things that caused us to loose money in 2016 and what we will be doing this year to prevent similar pitfalls.

Here are things which caused us to loose money:

 Not meal planning
Not meal planning meant that we ended up wasting food and not using up what we had in. This meant we were literary throwing away our money into the bin.

 Not having a budget
Not having a budget meant we didn't know where our money was going. Having a budget means you can see where your money is going, therefore being able to see  the areas where we need to cut down on

Not having insurance on valuable possessions
Not having insurance on valuable possessions meant that when my tablet broke I ended up loosing out on money as I had to buy a new one. So lesson learned and now I make sure I have insurance on my tablet, mobile and other expensive gadgets.

Not keeping an eye on when bills go out
Not keeping a record of when certain bills go out has meant on a few occasions going overdrawn leading to fees as our bank accounts don't have an overdraft

Not saving
Not saving has meant that when we had an emergency we didn't have the money to help us out meaning on occasion credit cards had to be used.

So here are some ways I plan on saving money in 2017:

1. Meal plan
I have started doing this using a magnet meal planning board which also has a handy memo and shopping list section. We have already decided a budget for our weekly food shop which we didn't do before which is helping to stop waste.

2. Using a budget planner
We have started to use a budget planner and will look at what we get in each month and what will be going out. The planner has sections for monthly and weekly spends and any monthly and weekly income we receive. The planner i'm using has has different sections for your outgoings such as bills, car, childcare, clothing, food, healthcare, insurance, leisure etc.

3. Insuring valuable products
I've recently got insurance on my new phone and also made sure my tablet has insurance too. I would recommend insuring expensive gadgets such as Iphones especially if you have children.

4. Use a filofax/diary
I've started using a filofax and diary to keep any eye on when certain bills go out which is very helpful as I can make sure we have the money to cover for them.

5. To do lists
I've started using to do lists in my filofax to remind me to do certain things for example set up a direct debit to my savings account.

6. Set up a direct debit to savings
I am setting up a weekly and 4 weekly direct debit into my savings account I'm starting off small with £5 a week and £20 every 4 weeks to see how I get on.

7. Use cash back sites when shopping online

8. Spending ban
I plan on doing a few weekend and also a month ban at some point this year

9. Sell unwanted items
Any money I get from sell unwanted items will go straight into a money tin

10. Cut down on takeaways and eating out.
By meal planning we will know what we are having each day so the temptation to go out or have a takeaway will be less.

I hope this post is helpful to you if you are like me and looking at sorting out your finances.
